NEED
CAFFEINE.

A complete brand system built around one furious tabby: Sarah's cat Buttercup, whose permanently dilated saucer eyes communicate exactly one message, and that message is espresso.

The origin story
What happens when your cat's angry face becomes a brand.

It started with a photo. Buttercup, Sarah's fluffy tabby, wakes the household at 5:55 AM sharp and spends the rest of the day looking like she is one missed espresso away from legal action. One grumpy photo of her blew up on Reddit, collecting 24K upvotes on r/airplaneears, and catching it mid-workday felt like a double shot.

So the face got laser-engraved onto a tumbler with the only caption it ever needed: NEED CAFFEINE. Friends saw the cup and demanded their own. To keep up, the running joke grew into a real system: a roast-ramp palette, a four-font type stack, a mascot logo, and a series of infographic posters that treat one cat's caffeine deficiency with the seriousness of a medical journal.

HOW FERAL IS SHE RIGHT NOW?

The poster system's mood meter, wired up for the web. Administer espresso and watch the diagnosis update. (The coffee is for the humans. Buttercup runs on spite alone.)

Built from the system's MoodMeter + Receipt components. The badge marker is the brand logo doing double duty as a data point.

FIRST A JOKE.
THEN A PRODUCT LINE.

The brand's first deliverable was physical: Buttercup's face and her one demand, laser-engraved into a tumbler. Production scaled the moment friends saw it.

The poster system

ONE JOKE, PLAYED
COMPLETELY STRAIGHT.

Three infographic posters stress-test the system: a hero poster that yells, a process infographic, and a diagnostic chart. Same tokens, same components, same deadpan delivery.

The system under the joke

YES, THERE ARE TOKENS.

Underneath the meme sits a real design system: a documented palette, a four-font stack, spacing and shadow rules, and reusable poster components. The comedy is a use case; the system is the work. Tap any swatch to copy its hex.

Full disclosure

BREWED WITH A ROBOT.

This project doubles as an AI experiment. Sarah used Buttercup as a sandbox for designing with Claude, Anthropic's AI assistant: testing how far an AI-assisted workflow can take a brand, from systemizing the tokens and components to writing the code for this interactive page. Sarah supplied the photos, the art direction, and the quality control. The cat supplied the attitude.
